And, if so, can you give some examples?ĭo you also hear the Hifiman Arya/Ananda to be lacking in macrodynamics?įull: X9000 / ZMF Caldera (Silvergarde S4) / Susvara (Vykari) / 1266TC (Superconductor) / Utopia 2018 (Lazuli Reference) / SR-007mki / Atrium Koa (Drausk) / Solitaire P / Verite Closed Koa (2K Copper) / HE1000v2 (Silvergarde S3C) / HD800S (Draug 3SC)/ 600/ 650 / Airpods Max if the headphone has a peak in one area of the frequency response I'll perceive it as having more impact there, and if it has a recession I'll perceive it as having less impact there. So this would suggest to me that I hear 'impact' as simply being related to frequency response - i.e. And really, this makes sense because the Ananda has a similar bass level to the Elex whilst having notably less prominent mids than the Elex. For me, they have similar impact in the bass (kick drums, heavy bass lines.etc.) whilst the Elex has notably more slam in the mids (snare drums, shouted vocals.etc.). Personally speaking, I have a Hifiman Ananda and have compared it directly to my Focal Elex. The headphones he often refers to as having strong/enhanced slam are Īll Focal headphones (Clear, Clear Mg, Elex.etc.)ĭo you recognize this phenomenon to be real? ![]() ![]() Most Hifiman products including Arya, Ananda.etc. The headphones he often refers to as having weak/reduced slam are a headphone with lower bass output can have higher slam as mentioned above) It is not related to frequency response (i.e. You can have 'slam' in the treble and mids too)Ģ). Occurs across all ranges of the frequency response (i.e. So the most important things to mention about his proposed slam/macrodynamics/impact concept is that it ġ). And likewise, a headphone with more recessed mids might have more impact in the mids than a headphone with more prominent mids. For example, a headphone with lower overall bass output might still have greater slam in the bass than a headphone with overall higher bass output. If you follow Andrew from The Headphones Show - you'll be familiar that he often bandies about the concept of slam/macrodynamics/impact as an attribute OUTSIDE of frequency response. It feels like it is literally sucking the air out of your lungs.Īnd for some headhones do they have some level of tactile response to them, others do not. This thing moves enough air that your hair will move, things will vibrate around the room and it will effect your breathing. Where as I have a 15 inch ported subwoofer that is pretty large and tuned to be -3b at either 10 or 15 hertz. But they are not all that engaging to listen to really and even they might play those frequencies they lack impact. Or like my headphones that say they can play down to 6hz (really on a headphone? why). Like you can have a small subwoofer that might play low. Even at frequencies higher than sub bass. But other speakers, especially larger ones can actually move more air and have a tactile impact on you. Some bookshelf speakers can play pretty low or have decent spl ratings, as well as some small powered subwoofers. Without reading a definition of what is actually supposed to mean to me "slam" would be how much pressure a driver can deliver to your ear, or how fast it can react.
